It is late summer in the high country of Idaho, and the Red Rock cattle roundup has begun. The quiet open range has been replaced by shouting and whistling cowboys driving their charges past our camp at Red Rock RV and Camping Park near Island Park, Idaho. The scene is typical of this part of the country but new and interesting to urban escapees. Near the park, the Meadow Vue Ranch is the venue of the annual cattle cutting contest held during the Labor Day Holiday. Nearly 600 horsemen participate in the contest held at this ranch each year. The practice of cutting cattle is standard at cattle ranches, but this sporting competition brings out expensive and well trained horses with their riders for this spirited display. A very complicated scoring system is very challenging for the horses and riders. Most of the cutting effort is done by the horse with the rider holding the front of the saddle or saddle horn and providing input only with leg and foot motion and pressures. What a great ending to summer!
